The SANFEED (Sustainable Animal Nutrition and Feeding) Program is a new Animal Science Doctoral Program in an industrial environment, founded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, which began in the academic year 2014/2015 and is coordinated by the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto.


SOJA DE PORTUGAL will finance, throughout the programme, four PhD scholarships.


Ongoing PhD projects:

2016: “Improving health and growth in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) through fortified nutrition: discovering new nutraceuticals from marine bio-refineries” – Bruno Reis.

2016: “Microbiome in poultry: influence of nutritional factors” – Vitor Silva.

2015: “Improving bioavailability of trace elements in dog feed: The role of organic sources” – Ana Margarida Pereira.

2014: “Evaluating the effects of animal by-products supplementation in diets for European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax)” – Inês Campos.


The programme is organised in the following four work packages (WP):

WP1: Increase livestock sector efficiency;

WP2: Decrease the environmental impact of animal production;

WP3: Promote health and animal welfare;

WP4: Assure product quality and food safety.


SANFEED establishes a unique collaboration between three exceptionally strong R&D institutions of international excellence in the University of Porto, UP (ICBAS, CIMAR & REQUIMTE), and ten highly selected industrial partners with strong R&D activity (AGROS, ALGAplus, Alltechaditivos, CAVC, INVIVONSA PORTUGAL, Premix, Sea8, Sense Test, Soja de Portugal & SPAROS).
